Speciality Coffee from The Artery Community Roasters
Help us to raise money for our social enterprise - by buying coffees from another amazing Ottawa social enterprise - The Artery Community Roasters - right here on our store.
We love two things about The Artery Community Roasters, helping people living with disabilities find worthwhile employment, and freshly roasted speciality coffee.
All the employees who are roasting and packaging thier coffee, are people living with disabilities. Their main mission is to provide stable employment and work experience, paid at a living wage, for people living with disabilities. Wages start at $16 an hour, increase steadily, and they are working towards providing full-time employment with full benefits to as many people living with various disabilities as they can.
In most provinces, people living with disabilities earn between70 and 75 percentof the income earned by people without disabilities. Many also face significant barriers to finding meaningful employment at all. The Artery want to play a small part in helping to change this.
They also want to show other businesses that not only is hiring people with disabilities the right thing to do, but it's also good for business! Consumers want to support companies that give back, and don't just take.
They also produce some of the best specialty coffee around. Freshly roasted on innovative fluid bed roasters, they sell direct trade coffee that they source through their friends at Semilla Coffee, who are coffee advocates and small-scale importers who care. This allows The Artery to operate with only 1 to 2 degrees of separation between The Artery and the farmers who grow their delicious coffee.
The artery also want to have as little environmental impact on our fragile plant as possible. All their deliveries are carbon neutral and they use vermicomposting to turn their coffee roasting waste (chaff, bags) into food for their gardens.
Note: Select from one of the OSCB school locations closest to you in Ottawa for local pickup too (select the closest school during checkout). We want to make it easy and reduce our carbon footprint. Check out this Google map for a listing of the schools available to be used for local pickup.
